reviews: [{"relativePublishTimeDescription":"10 months ago","rating":1,"text":{"text":"I'm writing this under a pseudonym, in case I want to go back into teaching in the future. I am a former supply teacher and worked a few days at Thorp Academy. This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review like this. I remember leaving work at this school upset at the extreme 'behaviour management '.\nI walked around the school and the kids just looked miserable. They were expected to behave like robots, when a bit of pushing boundaries is a necessary element of psycho-social development.\nOne very solid example I can remember was covering a Year 7 physics lesson. I am not a science specialist. Usually cover work for non-specialist teachers is work based on previously taught content, but this was brand new content. Luckily, some of the class had previously done it at the end of year 6 in their former primaries. I was more than happy for them to help each other (they were getting the answers right, as I had them). They were a genuinely lovely class. Nothing I would call bad behaviour at all (which, frankly, is a rare experience for a supply teacher). The permanent TA was also happy with the behaviour. I then had a deputy head march into the classroom and give multiple pupils Cs (negative behaviour points. 4=after school detention). For what? I honestly couldn't think of a genuine reason. I think it was for talking. But they were supporting each other. Every single task on the rigid task PowerPoint I was given was meant to be 'independent' i.e. no talking all lesson except to me or the TA. They were a class of low ability 11 year olds, a large amount of whom were SEN. A lesson like that should not be set in any circumstance for such a class. But they were such a sweet and well behaved class, and it disgusted me to see them treated like that by someone who marched in with no context and rigidly enforced harsh rules. The deputy head spoke to me at the end about making sure I'm giving Cs out. I regret not making the case for that class, but he'd already made me late for a short tutorial the other side of the campus.\nLater on that day, a year 9 boy wasn't allowed to go to the toilet. I'd allowed him to leave, but SMT wanderings the halls tried to send him back and stopped him from going. He ended escaping the campus and ran home to go to the toilet. I struggled to blame him.","languageCode":"en"},"originalText":{"text":"I'm writing this under a pseudonym, in case I want to go back into teaching in the future.
