Welcome from the Head • Wimbledon High School London GDST
Welcome from the Head Play Video A warm welcome from all of us at Wimbledon High to our website, which we hope gives you a flavour of the very special school community we cherish here in our corner of SW19. Since 1880, WHS has been educating girls to go out into the world and make a difference, and we continue to do so with pride, with energy and with imagination. Girls thrive here, in the classroom, on the sports field, in the concert hall – anywhere a Wimbledon High girl goes, she takes a sense of enjoyment, of confidence and of her own capability with her. Wimbledon High School doesn’t just have girls in it: it’s made by girls, for girls, with girls at its very centre. And, because of this, our girls achieve extraordinary things. Last year, 42% of A Level results were graded at A*, backing up the well-evidenced narrative that girls thrive intellectually in girls only environments; but we’re also a happy school, grounded and fun: in brief, we take ourselves seriously and hold ourselves lightly, a mantra reflected in our approach of Playful Scholarship. Our students know that, to achieve to the best of your ability, to be challenged beyond your own expectations, doesn’t have to feel like pressure; in fact, it can make you feel fulfilled, enriched and fully aware of how much there is to embrace and learn in this wonderful world of ours. Our girls aren’t daunted by competition or challenge, they thrive on it, and celebrate each others’ successes every bit as much as they walk alongside each other in their disappointments. As such, our young women stride out with confidence, not because they expect life to be perfect, but because they know that the magic lies in the mistakes, and in the trying again We’re proud of our school, and the girls and young women who make it the special place that it is. Come and find out for yourself. Fionnuala Kennedy Head The strategy document below will give you details of our 6-year strategy plan. Why Girls and GDST • Wimbledon High School GDST
Why Girls and GDST Wimbledon High School is a proud member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, a unique family of 26 girls’ schools, including 24 independent schools and two academies, across England and Wales. As specialists in girls’ education, we tailor our teaching to the way girls learn best. Wimbledon’s High’s first Headmistress was principled, pioneering and bold in articulating the radical vision that “women have minds as well worth educating as men’s”. We build on that history every day, in a community that allows girls to be themselves as they grow, away from the social pressures of a media-driven world. Our girls are encouraged to find and use their voices; academically, there are no unconscious biases at play in choosing subjects – Maths is our most popular A level. The GDST has published fascinating research about the strengths and impact of girls’ schools. Read the GDST Insights Report here. The GDST Insights Report Why Girls? A mission to help girls learn without limits â
